Working Principle and Installation Instructions of Three-piece Welded Ball Valve

2025-11-18
The working principle of a ball valve is to open or close the valve by rotating the valve stem. Ball valves are easy to operate, have a small size, can be made in large diameters, have reliable sealing, a simple structure, are easy to maintain, and the sealing surface and the ball surface are usually in a closed state, making them less prone to erosion by the medium. They are widely used in various industries.

Ball valves and plug valves belong to the same type of valve, but the closing part of a ball valve is a ball. The ball rotates around the centerline of the valve body to achieve opening and closing.
In pipelines, ball valves are mainly used for cutting off, distributing, and changing the flow direction of the medium. Ball valves are a widely adopted new type of valve.

Three-piece ball valves can be tightly closed with a 90-degree rotation and a small torque. The completely equal inner cavity of the valve provides a straight and low-resistance flow path for the medium. It is generally believed that ball valves are most suitable for direct on-off use. Development has designed ball valves to have the function of throttling and controlling flow. The main features of ball valves are their compact structure, easy operation and maintenance, and suitability for general working media such as water, solvents, acids, and natural gas. They are also suitable for harsh working conditions such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, methane, and ethylene. The valve body of a ball valve can be integral or modular.

Three-piece ball valves are a relatively new type of ball valve category, with some unique advantages of their own structure, such as no friction during opening and closing, less wear on the seal, and small opening and closing torque. This can reduce the size of the actuator. When paired with multi-turn electric actuators, it can achieve regulation and tight shut-off of the medium. They are widely used in industries such as oil, chemical, and urban water supply and drainage where strict shut-off is required.

I. Precautions for Three-piece Ball Valves:
1. Ensure there is enough space for the valve handle to rotate.
2. Do not use it for throttling.
3. Ball valves with transmission mechanisms should be installed vertically.

III. Advantages of Three-piece Ball Valves:
1. Low fluid resistance, with the resistance coefficient equal to that of the same length of pipe.
2. Simple structure, small size, and light weight.
3. Tight and reliable sealing. Currently, the sealing surface materials of ball valves widely use plastics, providing good sealing performance and are widely used in vacuum systems.
4. Easy to operate, quick to open and close, and only requires a 90-degree rotation from fully open to fully closed, facilitating remote control.
5. Easy to maintain. The structure of ball valves is simple, and the sealing rings are usually removable, making disassembly and replacement convenient.
6. When fully open or fully closed, the sealing surfaces of the ball and the valve seat are isolated from the medium, and the medium passing through will not cause erosion of the valve sealing surface.
7. Wide application range, from a few millimeters to several meters in diameter, and from high vacuum to high pressure. When the ball rotates 90 degrees, the entire ball surface should be presented at the inlet and outlet to completely stop the flow.
